Datuk Dr. Mazlan Othman, was born in December 11th 1951 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. She is married to Professor Ibrahim Komoo and had two children (Adi Johan and Elida Izani). Her current position is a Director-General, Science, Technology and Environment Ministry�s Space Science Studies Division. Dr. Mazlan is Malaysia�s first women in astronomy and astro-physics. She is Malaysia�s only female professional Astro-physicis. She was part of a group of experts who prepared a working paper for the government to set up a planetarium in Kuala Lumpur. Interested in being an astronaut, Dr Mazlan has applied to be Malaysia�s first cosmonaut. She is also the first woman. Datuk Dr. Mazlan Othman was a former student of the Tunku Kurshiah College, Seremban Negeri Sembilan. In 1975 she did her BSc in Physics from University of Otago, New Zealand. (under Colombo Plan Scholarship). She also obtained her PhD from the same University in 1981.
 
     
 
She was a lecturer, Physics Department, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.1988 – Associate Professor, teaching astronomy and astro-physics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. In 1990 she took the responsibility of setting up the National Planetarium. Director, Space Science Division, Prime Minister’s Department, till October 1995. In 1994 she was promoted from Associate Professor to a Professor, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. On October 12 1995 she was the Director-General, Science, Technology and Environment Ministry’s Space Science Studies Division. September 1999 she was appointed to be the Head and Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs based in Vienna .
